Anatomy
When an athlete suffers from a concussion, two things happen: One, the brain is slammed in the opposite direction of the blow, hitting the skull, which causes slight microscopic damage; second, the two hemispheres twist against the brain stem, causing a torque type injury. The brain stem creates cells that keep people alert and aware of their surroundings, and because of the abnormal twisting of the stem, the athlete will lose consciousness.
